Anna Moskwa, Minister of Climate and Environment, as well as representatives of the University of Warsaw and The National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), spoke at the opening of the second day of the Climate Summit TOGETAIR 2022. Anna Moskwa, Minister of Climate and Environment, as well as representatives of the University of Warsaw and The National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), spoke at the opening of the second day of the Climate Summit TOGETAIR 2022. The second day of TOGETAIR 2022 Climate Summit was opened by Agata Śmieja and Artur Beck. The topic of the day was the European net-zero economy. Anna Moskwa, Minister of Climate and Environment, spoke first: • I am very pleased to be on the Summit for the third time. As usual very interesting topics, good debates, I watched a huge viewing yesterday too. This viewership at home as well as abroad. I warmly congratulate the organisers on this success, because it shows that these issues are important no matter how often we talk about them. It's another Summit and there's still plenty to discuss. This year we are in an absolutely exceptional situation. While in recent years we have talked about the consequences of transformation, of climate policy, this year we find ourselves in a situation that brings us new challenges. And just like the myth that capital has no nationality, it has been said that multinational corporations are so internationalized that you don’t know who owns them. This myth, especially in times of economic crisis, has quickly been debunked. In the same way, today we are faced with the myth that energy has no nationality. Or another myth that energy policy is only one element of climate policy. This is one of the myths of the European Union, where energy issues were dealt with directly in the framework of EU Councils as part of climate policy, and the main objective and top priority of energy policy and change was decarbonisation and the transition to climate change. The Minister went on to highlight the rapid change in the policies of European countries in the light of the recent crisis. She stressed the need for energy sovereignty and complete independence from Russian raw materials. Remigiusz Kopoczek, Director of the NCBR, spoke next. Referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he said that this had led to the view that efforts to reach a green deal would remain limited in the next decade. • Poland and the European Union want to become independent of raw material supplies from the East as soon as possible. This includes the search for innovative solutions and new ways of switching to new, clean energy. At NCBR, we prepare such technologies. – He followed to describe the NCBR’s programmes and activities to promote the development of environmentally friendly science and technologies. He noted that: • We can always rely on Polish scientists and entrepreneurs when we need their knowledge, skills, network and commitment to tackle Poland’s major development challenges – The voice of the University Next, Jacek Cichocki, representative of the Rector of the University of Warsaw, took the floor. He said he was glad that the Climate Summit was taking place in one of the first eco buildings in Warsaw, the Library of the University of Warsaw. He stressed the importance of projects and research at the University of Warsaw in addressing the challenges of civilisation facing humanity. Alojzy Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, stated afterwards: • The University of Warsaw has been working theoretically and practically for many years on issues of environmental protection, climate protection and the so-called “friendly working environment” – especially of young academics – with the climate and the environment. – He went on to point out that academics were aware of the role of supporting young people in their education in the context of the environmental challenges. In his view, University graduates should be aware of the scale of these problems.
